Fix GNUisms to build under BSD and macOS

Mot requested to merge mot/firmware:fix-gnuisms into master

Some minor changes were needed to make the build scripts work under macOS (and possibly BSD). Namely ln, tr and dd behave somewhat differently and only common features are used now. Needs testing for Linux and BSD, though.
